They Lived by Tricks
by Pietro Micheli

(Expanded Edition)

If you like and want to learn more about magic history, this is the book for you. This book was recently reviewed by Marco Pusterla in Ye Old Magic Mag, and we are using a few excerpts of his description to describe it.

Pietro Micheli (winner of the 2012 Award for Research on Magic History), has probably written the definitive history of magic in the 18th century. The book covers all the main characters that were performing around Europe. He explains how they promoted themselves, their repertoire, and an understanding of their way of life two centuries ago.  The following magicians are covered in this tome:
Tommaso Palatino
Hyman Palatine
Monsieur Boulevard
Philip Jonas
John Rea
Philip Breslaw
Herman Boaz
Jan Van Moritz
Francois Pelletier
Comus
Vincenzio Barletti
Giuseppe Pinetti

Mr. Micheli originally published the material in 2012 in a limited edition which sold out. This new expanded edition contains even more material on the subject and it is impressive by the amount of illustrations, reproductions of playbills, engravings, broadsides and hand written documents that have never been written before. The research is extensive, as the book contains over 1200 footnotes.

The book was published in Italy, but it is written in English and it is a limited edition of 200 copies. We are proud to be one of the few dealers (perhaps the only one) that carries it in North America.

Hardbound with dust jacket; 446 pages
