Nielsen Dean’s Box – 2025 Batch – Video # 11The saga continues… And no, we are not even halfway done yet… In addition to this, I am working on a piece of furniture that has to be finished before the end of this month. Whew! Handcrafting a batch of one hundred boxes is no easy feat. It takes a lot of patience and attention to all the little details. After the components are stained, we have to apply the finish. My finish of choice for this project: Lacquer. I use a Mohawk paints lacquer finish that is used for kitchen cabinets. This box is touched a lot during performance, so the finish has to withstand the constant handling by the magician and spectators. All the components are first sealed with a sealer, after which they are sanded with a fine grit sandpaper, followed by two coats of the lacquer finish. The finish is durable and stunning. This video is tedious, because you are seeing me spraying over and over again. At 2x the speed, the minute and a half video summarizes one entire work week of my life.#nielsenmagic #magicprops #ilovewoodworking #finishing #handcrafted #highquality #womeninwoodworking #deansbox #mohawkpaints See MoreSee Less

Nielsen Dean’s Box – 2025 Batch – Video # 10Warning… Long 3 minute video…There is no music or much editing with this one. I just talk and explain what I am doing. I did speed it up to 1.25x, in order to make it shorter with minimal distortion to my voice. In the video I explain my process for “toning” the finish on the boxes. These details are what makes handcrafted props different than those solely made by machines. I like to think that a little bit of my heart, soul and attention to detail goes out with each item I make.#nielsenmagic #magicprops #ilovewoodworking #toning #finishing #handcrafted #highquality #womeninwoodworking #deansbox See MoreSee Less

Nielsen Dean’s Box – 2025 Batch – Video # 9The process still continues…After all the components are cut, sanded on one side, masked and prepared, they have to be stained.I am a stickler for having a great finish on the props we make. That is the reason why, whenever I can, I opt to finish the interior surfaces of the boxes before assembly. This avoids issues with having difficulty in accessing hard to reach interior surfaces and of having possible overspray problems.I am fortunate that my friend Denny helped me with this time consuming task of staining hundreds of components. One of the best purchases I made in the last couple of years was a drying rack. This item allows us to set things to dry in a vertical fashion, saving valuable shop space. The video at 2x the speed shows us staining the components.Thank you all for following the process.Have a great weekend!#nielsenmagic #magicprops #ilovewoodworking #staining #handcrafted #highquality #ilovesanding #womeninwoodworking #deansbox See MoreSee Less

I took this video close to midnight last night. I am back home.I can’t believe that I have been living in Las Vegas, Nevada, for thirty years.Where did the time go? Things have happened in the blink of an eye. In thirty years, I fell in love, got married, traveled profusely, worked like my life depended on it (because it did), met some of the most amazing people in the world, became a widow, laughed, cried and learned a lot. I have had a good life.Life goes on, and I sometimes wonder what does God have in mind now. When looking at the whole, though, we are a tiny speck when compared to the universe, and yet we take things so seriously…At this exact moment, all I know is that I am living one day at a time, in the present. This will be a busy week catching up with things and doing my best to finish a few projects and responsibilities. If you placed an order with Nielsen Magic, be assured that it will be processed between today and tomorrow. Thank you for your patience.Be well, everyone! ❤️🙏🏼☺️ See MoreSee Less

Nielsen Dean’s Box – 2025 Batch – Video #8So far, I am still in Panama, but should be returning to Las Vegas and re-opening Nielsen Magic on Tuesday. In the meantime, I am having the perfect break with no schedules or expectations… ☺️I did take the time to edit a video that has recorded part of the whirlwind of activity involving the Dean’s Box project. The two and a half-minute video (at 2x speed) shows the next few steps in the process. This time with the kind assistance of my friend Denny, we are working on the sides of the boxes (those that have the large holes), and the small round door that will eventually be attached to the top.You can see the CNC machine making the cuts for the door and the circles, and the entire process of us sanding the surfaces, routing and sanding the edges and masking the various components. So far, this is the 8th video and we have spent 150 hours in the process, and no, we are not even close to halfway done.Next step for the next video: Staining…#nielsenmagic #magicprops #ilovewoodworking #cncrouting #handcrafted #highquality #ilovesanding #womeninwoodworking #deansbox See MoreSee Less

My shop and little business in Las Vegas, NV is closed until October 20, 2025. All orders and requests that come in between now and then will be processed upon my return on October 21. Thank you for your understanding. For those of you wondering where I am, I am taking a couple of weeks off to come to Panama City, Panama. This is the place where I was born, and where I grew up.I still love the little country where I was raised. A wave of nostalgia hits me each time I see this view from the plane. Forty years ago, it was a small Latin American city with 500,000 people. Today, it is a thriving modern metro area with over two million souls. The skyline is huge! And yes, in spite all the stresses of modern life – traffic, busy work schedules, crowds, economic hardship, etc. – Panamanians somehow manage to keep their sense of humor and tackle their challenges. As my plane approaches the city, notice how overcast it is. I am visiting during the nine month rainy season. It is a lush tropical environment where it rains daily. The heat and humidity covers you like a wet blanket.I have some little business to do in this part of the world, and I also look forward to catching up with my family and a few friends.Be well everyone!#panamacity #PanamaCanal #panamaskyline #Pty See MoreSee Less
